From Ghandi to... Howard

I am interested in finding out where you rate on a political scale. If you have the time, please do this short (about 5 mins) test at Political Compass and post your result here.

I really would like to see your results - so don't let me down people!

My result (this will come as no surprise to some of you)

What is interesting is seeing where they rate such people as John Howard and Saddam Hussein.

'"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" is a fundamentally good idea.'

I initially read that as "is fundamentally a good idea"

A very different meaning. I ended up with this.

Luckily I corrected the minor error and got this. Incidentally, this makes me Nelson Mandella.

"From each, according to his ability; to each, according to his need."

I believe this is a fundamentally good idea.

I also believe this is fundamentally a good idea.

IMHO I don't think the sentence structure makes much of a difference, but I am interested in hearing where you are coming from with this, Sunny. I could always use a lesson in grammar, considering I never studied the basics of what nouns, adjectives, and verbs etc mean. As much as I liked the choice we had in vertical integration or whatever the hell they called it in HS, I wish I knew what I was doing; I feel so illiterate!

Back to the subject matter though - what did you choose as an answer to that question? I've never read any of Marx, but I agree wholeheartedly with this idea.

BTW Sunny - did you see the section on composers? I thought you'd find it interesting - if you think these guys to be credible.

I don't believe I was taught grammar, structure and so forth at school either. Is that something that was actually supposed to be covered?

On a related note, I don't know how to do subtraction or division by hand. Sure, I am able to do it using awkward, round-about methods of my own devising in my head, but the common method everyone else uses by pen is a total mystery to me. I suppose it was something that was taught at primary school during the several lengthy absences because of surgery and such.

Can't swim either.

well, if it's fundamentally a good idea, then that means the idea (whilst it may be stated incorrectly) is still roughly correct. If it's a fundamentally good idea, that means that the core value (which is stated correctly) is good, and fundamental to the belief system. It's a significant difference. It's like saying "Marx was right" (some graffiti at Mac Fields I'm really proud of, incidentally) as opposed to "Marx had an idea which was pretty close to being good." It's a lot easier to agree with the latter.

Incidentally the thing was a joke. The first result makes me a left wing fascist. I obviously haxored that result.

I also didn't learn anything about English in Australia (I did in India, but that was a long time ago).

I don't think the ability to do long division is important. I find I'm forgetting basic calculus and taylor series, which often gets me in a pickle.

That you didn't learn English here is rather interesting. I get the impression that, at least in public schooling, the technical side of the language is never brought up, and instead the focus is put on studying uninteresting novels and the like.

When I was studying Japanese, less than half the class spoke English as their native language. Often, the teacher would go into detail about how English functions, and how it works compared with Japanese. She would use various terms that I and the other native English speakers didn't know, but that everyone else knew about, despite all having learnt English in various different countries.

They didn't necessarily have a better understanding than we did, rather they learnt English by studying it, and hence were able to discuss it easily. Us native speakers, having picked those concepts up naturally, couldn't explain things worth a damn.
